End-stage arthritis can be effectively treated with robotically assisted knee surgery. In a year, Dr. Sunil Dash of AMRI Bhubaneswar performs more than 300 procedures.

TBN, 09/04/2024. Bhubaneswar: Robotics assisted total knee arthroscopy surgery is the most advanced method of treatment for patients with severe arthritis, bone deformities, shattered bones, or bone loss, conditions. Under the supervision and directions of renowned orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Sunil Kumar Dash, the Department of Orthopaedics and Joint Replacement at AMRI Hospital in Bhubaneswar marked the first anniversary of robotics-assisted knee surgery. In just one year Dr Sunil Dash,  with the super tech medical facilities, has completed more than 300 successful robotics assisted total knee replacement surgeries. In February 2023, the AMRI Hospital’s Orthopaedic department, led by Dr. Dash, began performing robotically assisted surgery using a fourth-generation image-free robotic system (Velys). And within a period of one year he has performed over 300 robotically assisted total knee arthroplasty (RATKA) knee replacements to date.
The most significant feature in robotics assisted surgery is the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to tackle more unresolved knee problems, which results in less pain and speedy recuperation. Patients can now easily access the state-of-the-art clinic in the city without having to travel outside for treatment if they have severe arthritis, bone deformities, shattered bones, or bone loss, conditions that the surgeons could not address with traditional surgery.

Dr. Dash also points out that choosing the most advanced and efficient robotic system is crucial for achieving optimal surgical outcomes. These systems help convert anatomical images into a three-dimensional joint reconstruction, allowing surgeons to predict the stability of the new knee and carry out surgery efficiently.

Dr. Sunil Dash, pioneer of robotics assisted knee replacement surgery, is the director of joint replacement surgery at AMRI Hospital. He was trained under the renowned professor Heiko Griachen in Germany. Dr Dash, a graduate of SCB Medical College in Cuttack, was awarded the International Fellowship 2010 by Asklepios Germany. He has been treating end-stage arthritic patients and the elderly, with a focus on problems relating to the hip and knee. Since he began doing joint operations in 2007, he has already completed 100,000 joints surgeries

According to Dash, the most widespread misunderstanding regarding robotics surgery is that the surgeon does not perform it. Actually the surgeon is in charge of the entire surgical process, with the help of a robotic arm. One of the robotics arm’s tasks is to assist the knee replacement surgeon during the procedure. In order to do a virtual surgery prior to the actual knee surgery on the table, the robot gives real-time data about the bones and soft tissues (muscles and ligaments) surrounding the joint.

Robotic knee replacement surgery offers several benefits, including lower long-term costs due to fewer complications and quicker recovery times, ultimately leading to better patient outcomes and higher satisfaction. Patients can return to their daily activities faster, appreciating the reduced downtime and improved healthcare services.
